De serie 'Beroemde Strijkkwartetten' is niet meer weg te denken uit de Doelen. Iets wat ondenkbaar leek in het Rotterdam van begin twintigste eeuw. De Kamermuziekvereeniging Rotterdam (KMV) zwengelde in 1907 de motor van kamermuziek aan. Maar de echte opmars van kamermuziek vond plaats na de opening van de Doelen in 1966.
