Kallax as 10/5 gallon tank stand? Help/Advice Hi all. I am moving into my apartment this week and am having an issue relating to an aquarium stand for my 10 gallon and 5 gallon tanks. I have a very small space for the tanks, so I was planning on putting them each on their own IKEA 2x2 Kallax shelf.

A 20 gal aquarium weighs about 250 lbs with just the water and the tank. Kallax cannot handle that weight. Yeah, short term it won't instantly buckle, but the materials cannot sustain it regardless if you wall anchor it. Imagine a full grown man walking around on the top of it all day everyday, that's the stress you're putting on it.

19 Aug 2023. #1. This is my first aquarium for several decades and I have been taking my time getting it set up. Several weeks ago I picked up a Superfish Cube 40x40 cm aquarium locally for £30. I removed the inbuilt filter and lighting unit and just retained the glass tank. For a stand, I purchased a Ikea double Kallax Unit and some door inserts.

2 inch hole saw How I assembled my IKEA BESTÅ aquarium stand: I built the BESTÅ frame per instructions. Then, drilled 2×2 inch holes at top left and right back cover for aquarium pipes and wires to pass through. 2387 posts · Joined 2011. #10 · Sep 17, 2015. The only problem I see is how you want to position the tank. Think about how much 29 gallon weights with rocks, soil and water. Now picture that, with a Kallax on it's side. You have to reinforce the stand because Ikea uses particle boards and not real wood.

Conveniently, the Kallax is as long as the tank I want to get, so the tank would be over all three vertical supports. I would reinforce with some L-brackets if I did get the tank - maybe even a diagonal support thing. However, MDF is bad for stands, yet it's still used by a lot of aquarium stand manufacturers.
